Default Removing old stuff that is out of SOL

I'm trying to clean up my long-neglected credit so I can get a mortgage. I was young and stupid and screwed up my credit. That was 10 years ago and I've really not done anything with it since because I thought it was not fixable. Now that I see my credit report, I'm learning that all this stuff is way past SOL. I don't know where to start besides disputing things, but after reading the wealth of information on this site, I'm more lost than I was when I began.

I am fairly new myself and no expert. I am in the same boat as you, but here is what I can share with you with confidence. The SOL isn't what determines how long something is on your credit report, it only determines whether or not the debt can still be legally collected on. For instance. I got a letter the other day from a collection agency wanting $240 to settle a $840 debt. This debt is past the SOL, not to mention it is due to come off of my credit report in September, needless to say, on this one, I am waiting till it falls off in September because they cannot sue me or garnish me since it is past the SOL for my state. What determines how long something stays on your credit report is the date of first delinquency, at least that is what I think it is called. It is the date of your initial missed payment which led to the item being reported. So, if you opened an account in Jan of 2000 and made regular payments on it until lets say January of 2008, then you stopped paying on it, it is the date of the first missed payment plus 7 years that determines how long it will stay on your Credit Record. I hope this clears up a little confusion. I know how confusing it is, I am still learning myself.

Here's a fairly simple breakdown...

Basic Step by Step Beginner's Guide to Credit Repair

One step at a time.... try not to let it overwhelm you.
Just keep reading and ask questions along the way.. that's what we're here for..

It will all start to make sense eventually..

Trish,
Is there a step by step guide to removing old addresses and employers because I haven't had any luck in these areas and have been tempted to hire lexington law. I disputed them online but they were quickly verified and not removed.

i found transunion to be very simple. i called them up and was very polite with the gentleman. he offered me a trial of one of their products and i agreed, he then asked me what i was calling in for and i told him addresses and name variations. he asked what my current address and correct name was and removed everything else.

equifax was easy as well, i used the online dispute tool and they sent me an email requesting a copy of my ID, SSN card and a utility bill to be faxed or mailed to them. i faxed it in and got an email that night saying it was done...
