Default Did i Do the Right thing?

OK, so here it goes, in college i messed up with credit cards, and racked up some debt. i have been paying it off, slowly to get my credit score back up and not have any debt.
so today i paid off a debt to Asset Acceptance LLC who bought my debt from Citibank. The account was charged off some 4-5 yrs ago, and they have been trying to collect on it since. the balance they wanted from me was $6400, but i settled for $ 2888, and i paid them.

for some reason i feel like i didnt have to pay them. well becasue for one, i dont owe THEM any money, i didnt borrow from them or anything, also now that i just paid it off, they said they will put a Paid in Full statement on my credit report (they absolutely refused to take it off my credit report).

so did i do the right thing? did i have to pay them? will it stay on my credit report for 10 yrs from now? how can i fix this? wat should i do now

oh ya, im finally out of debt (except my student loans) :-D

Well what you "did" isn't going to help your score if that's what you're asking. And since you're dealing with AA I hope you have something in writing as to what they claim they will do once you pay the account.

Also I am not sure whether you sought out validation prior to paying in order to establish whether "they" were the ones that had the right to collect and the amount they were seeking was the correct amount.

The TL should fall off 7 yrs from DOFD with the OC and not 10 years.

By fixing it, do you mean getting it removed from your CR?? If so, then you need to do the "basics" of credit repair then dispute the account with the CRA's.

you should have sent them a validation letter first just to see if they could even validate the account. As far as them removing it, good luck im dealing with AA and ive disputed with them countless times on a paid collection and they will not remove it at all. keep trying though you might get lucky but they are a holes
