Default Items On Credit Report Over 7 Years Old

I have absolutely perfect credit with one exception. A few years back I got a copy of my credit report and it showed that I owed a phone company almost $1000. dating back to around 2001. This is absolutely NOT my bill, and I refused to pay it.

I sent in a dispute online, and didn't worry anymore about it, since I've not had any problems with credit or anything.

The other day I pulled my report again, and the dispute that I lodged shows that it was confirmed as being mine. Also it is no longer listed as being the original creditor, but it now shows as being owned by a collection agency and shows it is a new account as of 2005.

My question is this. Since this is originally a bill from 2001, and should be gone off of my report after 7 years....is it now going to stay on there since the collection agency is showing it as a new account as of 2005?

NO. It should not be on there. You go by the date of first delinquency on the original debt. If the CA is trying to say the debt newer than that.......that is re-aging and it's illegal/a violation.

Dispute both accts (if both the OC and the CA are reporting) via certified mail. Hand write your dispute so that the CRA computer system cannot scan it. That way it is forwarded to a dept where an actual human has to read it.

You can just dispute it by saying that the account is not yours.......and even if it was, it's WAY past the reporting statute of limitations which is 7 years.

You can also contact the OC and CA directly and inform them that they are reporting false and inaccurate information and to delete the accts immediately from your reports.........but if you want to just dispute them first you can. Hopefully that is all you will need to do.

It should still fall off after 7 years from the DOFD.
