Default Collections Letters

I am getting letters from a CA that looks like it bought an old debt from another CA. I've been going thru old, old papers & it looks like an old debt that has been sold over & over again thru the yrs to few different lawyers & CA. I cannot be sure who the OC was but I think it was a medical bill. This debt is not on any of my CR's. Is there a way to stop these letters from coming w/out them putting it on my CR's?

How old is the debt? What you don't want to do is offer to pay them as it will reset the time limitation of the debt. If it is over 3 years old I would just do the best you can to ignore them. As time passes the collection matters less as far as your score is concerned.

The SOL does not reset by making a payment. The only thing that would reset an SOL is either by paying the OC (after the acct has fallen delinquent) OR by entering a new contract (either with the OC or a CA).

To the OP:
If it is a medical bill, you need to do your best to find out who the OC is.

Wouldn't it be kind of considered entering a new contract or like admitting you owe the debt with the CA if you paid them? Maybe I am thinking of something else. I get confused about this stuff. It's hard to keep it all straight. :o

As the owner of the site, I hate sounding like a newbie, but I'm here to learn as well as to teach. I've learned quite a few things from you, Trish. I appreciate all of your wisdom!

Thank you, Chane

How did I know I was going have to explain this one more?......lol :p
It's been a long time since I've been on this subject.........BUT there are only a small handful of states that would restart the collection SOL because of a payment to a CA. The reporting SOL will NEVER be re-aged by a payment to a CA......that would be illegal.

The ONLY way to restart the reporting SOL would be with the OC, before the acct is charged off. OCs are legally allowed to "re-age" a debt twice on the same account.
