First you can try a goodwill letter to the ca explaining that the agreement was for her to pay the bill.Tell them you did not want your children to worry about not being able to go to the doc,if they get sickTell them although your not responsibe.that as a step up dad you intervened to take that worry away.and you should not have to worry that if it happens again you should not be punished for being responible.

I think we were expecting (hoping) that the insurance company was going to pay the bill.

Did you bill the insurance company.They do have an appeal process for the insurance company
