Default Question Regarding Posted Information on website.

Can I get a free copy of my own credit report?

Yes! However, I highly recommend purchasing your credit reports at one of the services above. By obtaining a credit report for free, you give the credit bureaus an extra 15 days to verify your disputes. 15 days is a crucial amount of extra time to give the credit bureaus. In my opinion, you are much better off just spending $10-15, plus you get to see your credit scores.

Can someone elaborate on the 15 extra days, does it mean if i get a free credit report they get an extra 15 days to verify disputes ? (30 days + extra 15 days)
and if i pay for the service only 30 days to dispute.

Im confused, thanks for your valuable time.

If you use AnnualCreditReport.com, the credit bureaus have 45 days total, instead of 30 to verify disputes. If you use any other means of obtaining your credit reports, they only have 30 days.

Every time your report is pulled in any way, even for a soft inquiry, it is reported to them.

Also remember that when you use the actual hard copies of your credit report or the annual free one(not recommended) to dispute with that you DO NOT contact them in ANY way during the investigation period. The CRA's will look at that as you providing "additional info" and tack on an additional 15 days.

Just asking, Why not use the government's free credit report? I always thought this is better than buying your credit report. I mean, I hate that commercial about the "F.R.E.E. that spells Free, Free Credit Report dot com Baby"! I just want need the information to start my credit repairs, which one should I go with on getting my CRP?

Hi Sith,

If you use the free annual reports, the CRAs are allowed 45 days to process your disputes instead of 30 days, That time difference can impact your success rate and plus why give them the extra days. Don't use the 3-1 or tri-merge reports either. Just the regular hard copy report from each of the CRA's to start.

Btw, there's nothing wrong with getting the free annual reports, just DO NOT dispute from them.
