I had a cc charged off ($10k) about 6 years ago and then a law firm won a settlement against me about 3 1/2 years ago and now they have a judgement . They say the amount I now owe is 35k. The debt is owned by Unifund in houston. I received a settlement offer today from a law firm for $15,800. I finally got a job a year and a half ago that pays decent and have been saving in order to be able to settle this debt someday. I only saved $5k last year because of various things that i needed to get done. This year I'm on track to save $1,000 a month. So I have a total of $7k in savings now and will have $17k at end of year. What is the best way to approach this. How much should I offer? $3,300? $6,000 I have no idea what to offer or how to do this. Does anyone have any sample negotiation letters I could see? This is has been weighing on me for years and I'd really like to get the debt eliminated. I'm very wary of dealing with collectors. Thanks in advance for anyone's help. ****************************************** Edit: I forgot to mention I own a home and they have a lien against my home. I live in Texas. They can't take the home but they can take proceeds if I sell it to satisfy the debt Last edited by CharlieBrown; 02-08-2010 at 11:29 PM. Reason: left out information |

its up to you... but its typically hard to get them to settle for less than 40%. Personally I would just wait out the SOL. If you are really set on settling with them and want to have it removed from your credit you will have to pay the 15k or so, typically they will not delete it from your report if you 'lowball' a settlement offer to them. |
