Im new to this and I was going to go ahead and start the steps, sign up for paid credit reports, dispute info, send pay for delete letters and all that jazz on wednesday, but I got an offer from NCO Financial to settle for 50%--the medical debt is only 232.00 (from college). anyways I called them and I was very careful not to say that I owed the debt but that I either wanted verification of the debt or I wanted it removed from my report if I pay it in full and they would not give it to me. I asked them to send me a letter stating what I needed to pay and how it would affect my credit report and they would not do that. They also asked me for my phone number which I told them NO they can communicate with me through mail. Anyways, they kept asking me for my checking account or credit card number, so I ended up letting them know that I would dispute with my CRA and hung up. Anyways, whats the next move for me? Should I just start with the steps, or try and take advantage of this offer to settle and dispute later, or do I send a check with a restrictive endorsement, or follow the HIPAA method (which I really don't understand) or do something else? on a side note, I only owe 2600 dollars-nearly all of it is from medical bills from in accident I had in college and didn't have the funds to pay for, but now I have the money to pay for them and I don't mind paying it, I just want my credit score to go up. Hubby and I want to buy a house in 2 years or so. THanks for any advice you can give me! |

If you are willing to pay and have some time, I say go the HIPAA route. Read through it some more and if you have questions, feel free to ask and I will do my best to help you. It took me reading it a few times for it to make sense.. ![]() Oh and definitely stay off of the phone with those jerks....with the HIPAA method you have no communication AT ALL with the CAs... NCO is constantly violating laws and they are just rude......so you are honestly better off just not talking to them. |

I agree with Trish, try the HIPPA route- the reading is a bit boring but understanding the process and executing accordingly could save you some cash and nows a good time of year to have a little extra money, holidays and all. Best of luck! |
