Default NCO Refused My Payment In Full?

I know this is contrary to everything we've come to believe about collection agencies, but...

I recently sent in full payment of a 5-year-old debt to NCO. I have been disputing it for years, but now it's affecting my credit and I just wanted it taken care of and off my CR.

I talked to them on the phone, informed them that I would be sending them a check for the full amount. I secured a cashiers check, sent it registered mail, and figured that would be the end of it. 2 weeks later, they returned my check, uncashed, saying they could not accept it because my account was still "in dispute."

I realize that I skipped a lot of steps by not getting everything in writing, because I needed to get this done and over with. I'm on a truncated timetable, so I don't have a lot of time to get this taken care of.

So now I have to send them a written request to take my account out of "disputed status" and get permission to pay them. I didn't want to play games with these people in the first place and would like this to just come to as swift an end as possible. Any particular language I should add to my letter to cover my behind?

If you've disputed it, just wait for the CRAs to finish investigating it. If you were to do anything, the only thing you can do is extend the time needed for the CRAs to complete their investigation.

Once they finish investigating, they may just delete it, you never know. If not, then you can pay it off. In which case you can simply dispute it and have it removed.

You're obviously not doing anything that we teach here. Everything we teach here, you are going against. So, I'm not sure what else you want us to tell you.

Pay them in full and they will still be on your credit report for another 7 years...they don't just go away. You are asking for trouble by just trying to get rid of them fast. Do it the right way.

They returned your check because it was still in dispute status?

Ok, yes, you did go about it bass ackwards........but I would say that them returning your check was a blessing in disguise. Why the sudden urgency? I have a feeling if you just DV'ed them, it would probably get dropped.

NCO constantly violates......and lately they seem to fold easy. I'm betting they won't have any proper validation of your debt. Especially if it's 5 years old.
