Default selling debt to collection agency question

Hi, I'm new to this forums but hopefully someone can help me. I recently closed my account at T-Mobile, with a balance of $250, I called their finance department to figure out a deal to paying off the remaining balance. I paid 50 upon agreeing a bi-weekly payment of $54 every other week. That was it, the guy told me thank you and i hanged up. The day that i was suppose to pay $54, i was only able to pay $40 due to financial hardship. but the next payment i made a $60 dollar payment, yet they sent my account to collection agency. I didn't know that they would send my account to collection if i paid a smaller amount than agreed. Is this right? I've had a good credit, nothing in credit showed a collection agency attempting to collect any amount from me. Please advice. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to AAA Credit Guide!

To answer your question: No, it's not right and it's not cool at all. However, by law they can report you to collections when you are late. Most companies wait at least 60 days.

You should finish paying it off with T-Mobile and then ask them to remove it. If they don't remove it, dispute it with the CRAs (credit reporting agencies) until they remove it. Otherwise, it will be on your credit report for 7 years, even if you paid it in full.

by the way, what would be the best way to dispute it? I called t-mobile already and they simply told me that my account has been passed on to credit collection agency already and they wouldn't be able to do anything about it.

I would try talking to someone else. Usually they will just assign a debt to CA this early on. Seems a little hard core for them to sell the debt just because you gave them less than the agreed amount.

If the debt has been sold then it is out of TMobile's hands.......if it has only been assigned, they have the ability to recall the debt and take payments from you.

I would call back and ask for a supervisor like jj said.
If you can get them to recall the debt, then the CA has no right to report it on your CRs.
