Amex - you have proof it was paid in legal settlement - correct? send that to the other credit reporting agencies. I've tried the other route too - showing another bureau didn't have something listed, etc. - I don't think they really pay attention (nor care) about that.
Continue disputing the other lates the best you can. Or like you said, calling up the companies and pleaing your case to try and get them to delete - it is all you can do. And be nice (that is my hardest part; when I'm angry)!
