I have several Federal (IRS) tax liens. After speaking with the IRS I was told that they all had a statute of limitations of ten years. The IRS said that they will take no steps to remove liens that have expired, but then told me what to do:
I went to the county courthouses where these liens had been originally filed and obtained copies of the liens. About a third of the way down there is a bold rectangular box which states:

IMPORTANT RELEASE INFORMATION: With respect to each assessment listed below, unless notice of lien is refiled by the date given in column (e), this notice shall, on the day following such date, operate as a certificate of release as defined in IRC 6325(a).

I obtained certified copies of each lien ($1.25 each) and am in the process of mailing these to the credit agencies, requesting that each entry be removed.
