Default CRA didpute or goodwill letter?

I have several late payments that I would like to try to remove from my credit report. I have been doing research and it seems I can try to dispute them with the CRA or try to nicely ask the lender to remove them for me.
It seems to me that if I try the goodwill letter and it gets turned down and then try to dispute it later, the letter could come back as evidence that I admitted I was late.
My credit isn't terrible but I would like to get it up over the 700 mark. I have quite a few 30 days and one 60 day.
Which tactic should I try first?
