I agree with JJ. Look at your relationship with your bank as a business relationship. You have been doing business with them for 35 years. If after that long of a business relationship they are not willing to forgive and forget a few late payments, then it's time to end your relationship with them and let everyone you know how they treat 35 year old business partners.
I would also send a letter to the president of the CU and anyone else who will listen. Maybe even send a letter to your local newspaper.
