They would rather you dispute online, because it's easier for them, plus they limit your reasons as to why you are disputing an account...they make you choose between a few things.
But, what most people don't know is that you don't have to give them a reason and many times you shouldn't give them a reason. The burden of proof is on them, you don't have to say "not mine" (and shouldn't say that unless it truly isn't yours). All you need to say is "please verify this account or remove it". That tells them that you dispute the account and requests an investigation WITHOUT giving them a reason. Let them figure out why it is reporting incorrectly. It's their job, not yours.
It's much more effective and smarter, in my opinion, to write a letter.
